The sculpture is built by casting from face moulds and joining the casts to one another. It is shown
on a plinth, with wire mesh gathered beneath it.
A heap is a crowd, a cluster, a mass formed when many people or objects come together. As masses
develop their norms, they also draw on what has accumulated in the units that make them up. The
family — the smallest form of these units, and society's touchstone — gathers judgements within itself
and reflects them outward. Acting on the whole from the ground up, the family directs our sense of
identity by setting our place in society, the roles we are expected to take on and our status. The
limits of the family, reflected by these units onto the majority, become the norms of the heap.
