Cast from moulds taken directly from a model, the front of the sculpture is plaster while the back is
built from rope. Face casts, again taken from the model, are massed together and fixed onto a single
body. The figure stands on its own base, itself plaster at the front and rope behind.
Root is defined as the sum of the intangible forces that bind a person to a place, and it marks each
individual differently. The entrenched structure that a society carries within itself encloses the
individual as well. However much this structure — formed by a set of traditionalised elements —
evolves, it preserves its inherited shape and forms a chain. A person takes their place in society by
joining that chain.
The massed heads on a single body describe the state of being held together as a society, while the
rope structure behind is intended to make that binding visible.
