The sculpture is shown on a plinth. Moulds were taken from human faces and cast in plaster; the cast
faces were then brought together into a mass of heads. The work was completed by dressing that massed
head form in wire mesh.
A shield is defined as something that protects, and here it is symbolised through the mesh. The wire
refers to the shield that members of a society build around themselves out of a desire to feel safe
and to belong somewhere. This shield, which a person uses as a kind of shelter, is at the same time
their prison.
